New Mexico Autism Society, 3rd Annual Project Connect Fashion Show 2015
Abq Apparel Center Choice Winner
Nikki was the Judge's Choice winner of the 3rd Annual Project Connect Fashion Show presented by the New Mexico Autism Society, held in August of 2015. The Albuquerque Apparel Center, supporters of the show since its conception, also chose Nikki's design as their favorite. She, along with other local artists, were provided with two yards of Puzzle Piece fabric representing Autism, to use with their own materials to create a clothing design inspired by a vintage fashion icon of the 1940s and 1950s.
Nikki's “Elegant Audrey Hepburn"- themed dress was auctioned off at the end of the evening to help raise money for the New Mexico Autism Society for events, Support Groups, Playgroups, Motorcycle Rallies, Charity Walks, Sensory Friendly Movie Viewings, and Holiday Parties.
She chose to participate in her first Project Runway event for Autism Awareness because as a mental health professional and member of various community service organizations, she is committed full-time to serving and helping others. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a lifelong neurobiological disorder that interferes with the development of communication and social interaction skills. Currently, ASD is estimated to affect as many as one in 88 American children.
Nikki was awarded a special guest vendor spot at this year's New Mexico Fashion Week. Nikki is a part-time seamstress showcasing her vintage inspired aprons under her label "Vanilla Pudding Aprons". She is inspired by the classy homemakers of the 1950s to create retro-styled aprons that can be worn with heels and pearls, and while cooking meals for loved ones. Nikki is thrilled that her sewing skills helped to promote the Rock-”ability” of those affected by autism through fashion, and finds it fitting that she is here in April to celebrate her win, which happens to be Autism Awareness Month. Visit her vendor booth to see her one-of-a-kind, and made-to-order creations!
