I see myself as an artist first and fore most. I grew up always drawing and making little animals out of whatever I could find. My mother, like most, would sew everything from curtains to pillows to her own clothes, she and my father were always going to masquerade parties and the costumes were always my favorite.
Every time she made mine, I would win best costume in my class. I asked her one day after our millionth time to TG&Y for fabric and patterns, why she made her own clothes? She said, " Dad gives me money to buy clothes all the time, but I don't like what I see in the stores, so I can make them exactly how I want!" I remember thinking that was impossible.
It would start with the paper pattern being cut out, then the fabric. Then the piecing would begin, that's where I fell in love! Before I knew it, the night she would be wearing her garment would arrive.
She loved her Jane Fonda workout which made her look that much more like a movie star, fit and so glamorous when it all came together.
I've always been the kind of person that, if I see it done I can replicate. After moving to LA right after high school to attend Otis Parson's, I discovered it was not right for me, but there were some amazing "life" skills I learned instead.
About three years ago my life completely changed. My mother passed away, with my father passing three years prior to that, I no longer had my parents around. But what I did have was my fathers work ethic, to stay true to what you do. My mother's creativity in all she did from keeping us on a budget, to being there for each other, and of course her sewing.
I've taught myself, and have done a lot different types of jobs that have given me experience and inspiration to make a change.
All things have come back Fashion!...
