Destinista Fashion     Espanola/Santa Fe,NM

Picture
Destini Duran was born in the small town of Espanola, NM and currently still resides there. Her designs merely come from the influence of modern abstract art. Destini graduated from Pojoaque Valley High School in 2011 and went straight on to college to pursue a degree in Biological science from the University of New Mexico. After a year she decided that was not what she fully loved. She decided to join the fashion design program at the Santa Fe Community College and graduated May of 2014 with an AAA in Fashion Design. She received the best of show award Fall 2014 from the college, which was a huge accomplishment to her. She currently is still in school pursing an exercise science degree for physical fitness, while designing on the side.  Destini's newest collection is entitled "A Tower of Blue." She was inspired by the abstract empire state building in New York late one night while strolling the town. The collection is full of sophistication and fluidity. She is looking forward to launching the collection Spring 2015 for NMFW. She is never afraid to step out of the box, while mixing fabrics, textures, and prints. Open your eye to the modern edge of fashion and see what she has coming next. She loves to express the love of art she has through her creations. She stands for her motto “Where fabrics come to life!” and creates every design to bring life to the woman wearing it.  Visit some of her designs on facebook: Destinista Fashions or give her a call at (505)927-6229.

It takes action for one to follow, which is admired by dedication, and hard work. Living in two worlds of traditional and contemporary, she finds her balance in composing Contemporary Native American Jewelry, as she represents a new generation of jewelers.

Kenneth "K-Bobby" Edgar     Bedford, MA

Emmy Award winner, Kenneth “K-Bobby” Edgar grew up in Jamaica, in a family where his father, a typical Jamaican male of that era, was appalled that his son showed early interest in women’s fashion. Fortunately, K-Bobby’s mother was a forward-thinker, believing that her son’s obvious clothing talent was a gift that should be appreciated and developed, encouraged his interest.  Starting at the unbelievable age of 12, K-Bobby quickly became a seasoned designer and dressmaker in his village, sewing gowns for brides, bride’s maids, beauty queens, graduations and balls. He realized his gifts were real and rare and, wanting to augment his natural abilities with more formal training, at the age of 14 he enrolled at Madame Francoise’s School of Fashion in Kingston.  Thanks to the recognition and opportunity given him by this very special lady, K-Bobby earned an Emmy in 1995 for his work as hair stylist for the 1994 CBS mini-series, “The Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All”. K-bobby’s designs have been photographed by many of the top fashion photographers, with designs featured in issues of several popular magazines.  When not busy sketching and sewing, K-Bobby tries to spend time with each of his five sons and only daughter, all of whom have inherited their father’s love of beautiful fashion and can sometimes be seen working backstage and walking the runway in his shows. Visit www.k-bobbyinternational.com for more information.

The last half-century has not been kind to men's hats. Just a couple of generations ago in the western Ecuadoran village of Montecristi, some 200 artisans made a living weaving fibers of the indigenous palm leaf, paja toquilla, into the lightweight tropical (and somewhat misnamed) fedoras known as Panama hats. When Texas-born Milton Johnson stumbled onto Montecristi in the mid-1970s, he found only 20 hatmakers still fashioning fine, traditional Panamas. Fascinated by the skill and precision of the trade - producing a single hat can take up to a year - Johnson opened Montecristi Custom Hat Works in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1978.  Today, Johnson travels to Ecuador two or three times a year to buy unfinished hats, which he brings home and shapes. Prices vary depending on the fineness of the weave: The lower end begins at $400, and Super Finos start at $3,000. Johnson's prized possession, a collection of 24 unfinished Super Finos produced more than 30 years ago by master weaver Juan Franco and his family, is valued at around $250,000.  While it's not every day that Johnson sells a $20,000 Panama, trade in many other styles and categories, particularly golf hats, remains strong. "Dermatologists have been great for business," he says. "Every time a golfer sees [a dermatologist] these days, the doctor says, 'Get yourself a hat.' "
One of Montecristi's models at New Mexico Fashion Week Albuquerque will be famed Santa Fe artist Douglas Magnus
Douglas Magnus (b. 1946) moved to Santa Fe from Los Angeles, via the U.S. Army in El Paso, in the late 1960s. A photographer and videographer, Magnus expanded his oeuvre while in New Mexico to include painting, sculpture, and jewelry, an art form he honed while apprenticing with local Indians in Gallup, New Mexico. Soon after he acquired the famed Cerrillos Turquoise Mines, the same land originally mined by Native Americans some 1000 years ago, and later by Tiffany & Company in the early 1900s.  Today Magnus lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico, conceiving original designs and finished products from turquoise, silver, gold, and other materials. He is also a prolific painter, embracing numerous subjects such as interiors and figurative works, while partial to plein air paintings created on site at his mines.  Above all, Magnus embraces quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship for collections such as "Plus Ultra," "Primal Diamonds," and "Santa Fe 400." Whether creating a necklace using rare Cerrillos turquoise, which he honors consistently with 18kt gold settings, or carving designs for silver jewelry and belt buckles influenced by historic Spanish coins or NYC manhole covers, Douglas Magnus stays true to his unique, evolving vision and his commitment to beautiful, handmade works of art.

ODELL by Kayleigh Dawn     Atchison KS

Picture
New Mexico Fashion Week Albuquerque is pleased to announce the return of NMFW2014 designer, ODELL by Kayleigh Dawn.
Kayleigh Dawn Fuhrman has been working with rock singer Dawn Michele, lead in Christian band Fireflight. Kayleigh Fuhrman,
who hails from Atchison KS, was 17 when she debuted her line at NMFW2014. Dawn Michele resides New Mexico; her runway presentation of an ODELL garment was more serendipity than plan.  "The two hit it off quickly. One thing led to another, and soon Dawn Michele was walking down the runway in one of Kayleigh Dawn's dresses," said Melissa Lea Beasley. Executive Director and Founder of NMFW. "It was so exciting!".  Kayleigh Dawn was popular among the hair and makeup people working at NMFW2014. "She's a visionary," Beasley added, "and she knows exactly what she wants. There's no diva attitude with this young woman."
Late last summer, Kayleigh Dawn traveled to Nashville to meet with Dawn Michele and her stylist, Angela Duncan, who was thrilled with Kayleigh's designs. "Angela wants to connect Kayleigh with the film industry and other bands," Beasley stated.  "Kayleigh is a perfect example of an emerging designer, one with a fashion-forward outlook that is seasoned by her youthful exuberance," Beasley said. "We are happy that she chose to be a part of NMFW2014, and wish her the very best as her career unfolds."

18-year-old designer, Kayleigh Fuhrman's style has been described as edgy, contemporary and futuristic.
When we were little, my sister and I saved our money to buy a horse.  We were 7 years old when we bought, Della.  Her registered name is O’Dell’s Blue Queen.  She’s meant a lot to me through the years and she is getting really old.  I wanted to honor her by naming my fashion label after her.
I would describe my style as edgy and futuristic, versatile and sometimes girly.  I am inspired by video games, Anime, and sometimes my mom’s vintage sewing patterns.  I think girls who are artistic and comfortable being themselves will like wearing my clothes.  Girls who don’t find it necessary to blend in with the crowd will enjoy my line. Sometimes jeans and t-shirts make a person look lazy, like they don’t care about their appearance.
Don’t get me wrong, I wear jeans and t-shirts sometimes, but I feel my best when I express myself through clothes and I think that is true for most girls.  It really bothers me when girls think that putting on a pair of expensive jeans and a nicer t-shirt means they've “dressed up.”  It doesn't take much imagination to put on a pair of expensive jeans and add a nicer t-shirt. I think they should try something new, maybe something like ODELL by Kayleigh Dawn! Don’t get me wrong, I wear jeans and t-shirts sometimes, but I feel my best when I express myself through clothes and I think most girls do.

I have always been interested in fashion and art.  I wanted to find a career that let me express myself.  The women in my family enjoy sewing and so,
I thought fashion design would be a good fit for me.  I don’t know much about sewing, yet.  I've done a few simple things, but I am hoping to learn from my mom.  I would like to be able to design and then sew the garments myself.
In the future, I’d like to travel.  I like looking at my surroundings for inspiration.  I went to an aquarium with my niece and nephew and took lots of pictures of fish.  The colors and patterns were beautiful.  I hope that girls who hear about my fashion line will be inspired to be themselves and not worry about what others think.  I struggled with that constantly until I became focused on fashion design.  I've always felt more confident when I dressed the way I wanted to dress.
